Good doctors and staff. Much better service than in Florida.

I've never had a bad experience. They're ALWAYS friendly. The building is dated, but the technology is not, so who cares as long as they're being treated, right?

I have always had excellent service. All my needs met. The staff returns my calls in a timely manner and I get my appointments when I need it. I have a doctor that is caring and listens to me!! I have recommended this VA clinic to many soldiers!

It's a VA so be prepared to wait.

On the whole, my experience with the Rochester VA has been better than my experience with caregivers outside of the VA system. The VA is not perfect, but I have more gripes with the University of Rochester Medical Center/Strong Hospital/Highland Hospital (URMC) system and my URMC primary care doctor than I do with the VA. One huge issue with URMC is that they don't respect the patient's time. I show up on time for appointments and so often I have to wait one or two hours or more before getting to see the URMC doctor. At the VA, I show up on time and I'm being called in to see the doctor within 5 minutes of the appointed time. As with doctors outside the VA, I sometimes have to be assertive to get an appointment, or to get a prescription filled on time. You can get authorization to see a doctor on the outside when the VA cannot offer an appointment within 30 days. You can't sit back and wait for something to happen. My experience is that if you are assertive, you will get all the care that the VA system can provide. Call the patient advocate if needed. Call her again if she doesn't respond. Learn who can help within the Rochester-Canandaigua VA and record their email addresses and phone numbers. While there is no hospital or surgery in Rochester, I have driven to Syracuse for a successful surgery and to Buffalo for successful treatment of service-connected hepatitis-C. I could make a long list of instances where the VA was exceptionally helpful, and an equally long list of instances where doctors outside the VA provided me or my wife with service levels that ranged from bad to malpractice. I've talked to veterans who think Rochester and all the rest of the VA are horrible. I make suggestions as to how they can take advantage of the system. After a while I realize they don't want to take responsibility for their care. They want someone to do it for them, or they just want someone to blame.

Only VA in area. Must go to hospital in Buffalo or Syracuse for urgent care. Or go outside VA system.
